Krug 2008 is the single-vintage expression of the 2008 harvest at Krug — a year long regarded as one of the great vintages of the early twenty-first century in Champagne, marked by cool ripening, sharp acidity and unusually long ageing potential.
Like every Krug Vintage, the cuvée is an assemblage of more than two dozen individual wines from the year, vinified parcel-by-parcel and partly fermented in small oak casks. The wine spends well over a decade on the lees in the maison's cellars under Reims, dosed low at disgorgement. Krug 2008 was released in 2019 and has been the subject of a sustained pairing programme (Studio Krug) and a Max Richter musical interpretation in the maison's ongoing tasting series.

Pale golden yellow, silver reflections, fine, lively and persistent mousse. Initially fresh baked goods, cookie and almonds, in the background acacia honey and blossom, fine nuances of candied lime zest, ripe cherries and oranges in the background, symphonic bouquet. A rich texture that conveys great freshness, taut chalkiness combines with fruity acidity, appears young and taut, shows a deep finish with enormous length; all true Champagne lovers have rightly been looking forward to this classic beauty.Lively, complex and precise, carried by an incredible lightness and offering great drinking pleasure. Champagne doesn\'t get any better than this.

This is very structured and framed with an almost red sensibility. Very phenolic. Full-bodied in a tightly wound ball with so much going on. Very pinot like. Mineral and stone. Shell and stone. Iodine. Vinous. The bubbles just fade into the finish of the wine, which goes on for minutes. Turns to toffee and salted caramel with time in the glass. One for the cellar. Great length. Blend of 53% pinot noir, 25% pinot meunier, 22% chardonnay. Disgorged in beginning of 2020. Drink or hold.

Had this twice over the past few weeks, and it was incredible both times. Sharp as a razor\'s edge, the wine is marked by its blinding, razor\'s edge of acidity. Crisp, crackling, bright, perfectly ripe, yellow citrus, crushed rocks, almonds, and brioche are all over the place. The resilient finish just keeps on going This is a Krug to age.

A vintage Champagne from this producer is rare. But 2008 was a great year in Champagne and that shows in this intense, still amazingly young wine. Freshness works with the richness to give concentration, density and the sure-fire possibility of long-term aging. So drink now, but the Champagne will last for many years. Roger Voss
