La Grande Dame was launched in 1972 (vintage 1962) to honour Madame Clicquot, who turned the house into one of Champagne's great names in the early nineteenth century. The cuvée is built around Pinot Noir from a small set of grand cru parcels she once owned — Verzy, Verzenay, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Ay — completed by a Chardonnay backbone from Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger.

It is declared only in vintages the cellar judges worthy. A rosé version is assembled with red wine from Bouzy. The wine is kept on lees for at least eight years before release.
